Hi Everyone,

My two sons, ages 6 and 9 have hypogammaglobulinemia. They will be starting IVIG infusions in October. I was wondering if you could give me advice on what to expect and how to help them cope. What are the dos and don'ts you recommend with these treatments.

Any help would be appreciated. The boys are scared.

Thannks!

Good Morning Kathi,

I started receiving IVIG when I was 14 years old and sort of tripped through the whole process blindly. Now, 16 years later I have discovered a few tricks that have helped me cope with the mental and physical process of recieving IVIG treatments.

First, as a child my mother always referred to my treatment as "body maintance" much like getting a hair cut. This reframing of the treatments helped mentally prepare me for my weekly trip to the hospital. We also made it into a joyful experience with a bag full of fun things to do in order to pass the time, my favorite foods for lunch and the lastest movies on hand.

Secondly, in my bag of stuff for the infusion center I always carry; a heating pad (helps with starting the IV), headphones w/ iPod, laptop w/ movies, a soft blanket, and a good book.

Lastly, once home I go directly into a hot bath. The hot water helps to promote circulation and helps with body aches after treatment. I never take the recommened Benadryl (makes me too sleepy).

Good luck to you and your boys.
Hugs,
Shel

Dear Kathi,
I am writing this e-mail to you from Istanbul/Turkey.
I have a 4 yr old daughter who started receiving IVIG treatment about 2 weeks ago. She was quite curious about why bottlefull of medicine was being infused... She was also complaining about the blood tests were run on her. But we found a solution and told her that , the blood taken from her were washed cleaned and brought up to a perfect condition . And all her blood were filled in the small bottles and had to be given back to her. She agreed. We did not experience any side effects. And she enjoyed a lot during the infusion while we read her books. Now while she is playing with her dolls , she takes blood from them and infuse IVIG to them and telling us that they are getting better ...
Try to make it fun ...
Good luck, God bless...
