IgA Deficiency with low IgM???
Posted by: Mom2FourBoys (66.255.210.---)
Date: October 18, 2005 04:07AM My two-year old son was just diagnosed with a IgA deficiency combined with a low IgM level. His IgG level is normal. I can't seem to find any information on this particular situation. It appears that this is not a common combination of deficiency. Does anyone out there have more information or suggestions of where to look? We are treating him with a profolactic dosage of Amoxicillin to help prevent bacterial infections. I have read that a gluten-free diet can help with the chronic diahrea...anyone have any words of wisdom on their experience and treatment? Re: IgA Deficiency with low IgM???

Date: November 11, 2005 04:17AM My mother has IgA with low Igm as well. She was diagnosed at 18months. (which was surprising considering she had been fully tested for it at birth as her brother has agammaglobulinemia - spontaneous development?) A low gluten diet will have no effect on diarhea. Gluten has clearly no effect on immune deificiencies. If your son had Coeliac's it would be a different story. The best thing according to my healthy mother and uncle is - don't fuss too hard. Date: November 20, 2005 06:32AM Your son probablu does not have celiac disease but what researchers calla "Sprue-like Syndrome". All the sighns and symptoms of celiac but the biopsies are always negative. Primary immune defiencies are usually accompanied by malabsorption causing weight problems, diareah and often a b-12 defieciency. Personally I know that I can take a box of 48 immodium and not get any relief from the diarreah. There is a powder they give to patients with high cholesteral than can be mixed with juice. It adds buld and slows the food going through your system so your body has a chance to use it. Re: IgA Deficiency with low IgM???

Date: January 02, 2006 02:11AM My daughter and son both are IgA deficient, and I have CVID. My daughter uses Immodium for relief, and this helps. There is no real treatment other than antibiotics for sinus infections, etc., that I am familiar with. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
