CVID and disability...

Hey everyone...I'm brand new to the forums and looking for a few answers. I am military, and just got diagnosed at the end of October. I start getting IV-Ig next week and have been told I'm getting Gamunex. I don't really know what that means other than the medical people say it's a great brand...I dunno...anyway, I'm being told that having CVID precludes me from continuing my military career because I can no longer deploy. Okay, whatever, though I had planned to retire, looks like I'm going to have to figure out something else. My hubby and I have four kids and one on the way...I'm scared because I don't know how this illness is going to affect me. I mean, I have always FELT this way, but never having the diagnosis, I never got supported at home for being exhausted or sick or whatever, and had to sort of fake my energy and what-not. WITH the diagnosis, things at home are so much more supportive...but what happens when the military separates me? Will I get any benefits? And will I be able to work a regular, stable type job, like law enforcement? Does anyone know the answers to these questions? No one on my military installation can help me, and I feel like my life is spiraliing out of control around me...HELP!! Thanks so much smiling smiley

Shel oh...my email is battleroo@hotmail.com

From what I understand, and I am no expert...we are really brand spanking new to this as well, you should be entitled to disability thru social security, I know that XLA is covered. I don't know if you work whether you will be covered or not. The best thing for you to do is to call the social security admin and look online and begin looking into all the benefits and info NOW and prepare ahead of time.

I am sure there are other people on here who will give you better answers...

best of health!

Hey Battleroo,

I hear ya. I remember when I was little I had no energy and was always feeling sick. My Dad was a Marine in Vietnam and decided to be a Marine father. I had a tough upbringing so you can imagine that my lack of drive and energy was unacceptible to him. He always told me that I wasn't sick that it was just in my head. Like you no support from him. Now that I have been diagnosed all the pieces to the puzzle fit. I realize now what was wrong with me all my life. I know that you can continue on your life as you have planned. You can still do whatever you want just be a little more cautious to wash your hands after bathroom and before you eat. I have been diagnosed since August 2006 and have had 6 IVIG and have now started Sub-Q. It is weekly but I do it myself at home with no nurses. I prefer it much better. I have been doing fabulous. I live in El Paso, Texas, right by Fort Bliss know a lot of military. If my memory serves me right when you retire you still get military benefits they should still cover you. Hope all goes well. Don't put yourself in a bubble you will be doing much better since you have been getting treatments. I had Gammagard IVIG and did great always took one benadryl and two tylenol half hour before infustion. Now I am on Vivaglobin Sub-Q and take no pre-meds and am going really well.

Laura
